Our School

History

Ashcurch Primary School has been serving the local community in Ashchurch since 1842. The original building is still in use today. As the school has grown, two additional mobile classrooms were added to accommodate children in KS2. In 2004, an building project took place which saw the extension of the old building to include two KS1 classrooms, a cloakroom, toilet block and group working space.

Ashchurch playgroup also shares our school site. Although this is managed separately to the school, we work closely with the playgroup team to ensure a smooth transition for those children who come in to Reception.

Classes

Our school has 4 mixed aged classes:

Diamond Class (YR/Y1), Emerald Class (Y1/Y2), Ruby Class (Y3/Y4) and Sapphire Class (Y5/Y6)

Although we have mixed-aged classes, teaching and learning is organised in such as way that children are taught in single year groups for Maths and English.

Facilities

Our classrooms are fitted with all the necessary resources and equipment to help us deliver an exciting and inspiring curriculum.  Every classroom has a state of the art CTouch interactive whiteboard.  We have recently purchased 40 Chromebook devices and invested in high-speed broadband. This means that children do not have to share a device and can be up and running in seconds.  They have transformed the way we teach and allow us not only to provide an engaging Computing curriculum but they also support learning in other areas of the curriculum too.

Outdoors

Our children have access to a large playing field which is used for as long as the weather permits.   A football pitch is marked out and there are many other games and toys for them to enjoy during breaks and lunch time. Our field is also used as part of the forest school programme. The playground is marked out with a variety of games, large tyres to play in and we have an adventure playground area which is used by each class on a rota basis.

We are extremely lucky to have an allotment area as part of our playing field which the children really enjoy taking responsilbity for. The children decide what is grown, plant and care for their own area and some classes have even been known to cook the delicious potatoes they have grown!

Army

Given that we are very close to the army camp at Ashchurch, the number of children who join or leave our school at times throughout the year other than those expected, is higher than the national average.
